About NACCS

The Neuro Anaesthesia & Critical Care Society (NACCS) has a rich history that dates back to 1965, originally founded as the Neurosurgical Anaesthetists’ Travelling Club (NATC). At the time, there was a growing need for a dedicated group where anaesthetists specialising in neurosurgery could exchange knowledge, discuss best practices, and collaborate on research. The club provided a unique platform for these specialists to meet, share insights, and advance the standards of neuro anesthesia. Over the years, as the field evolved and the demand for specialised knowledge increased, NATC expanded its scope and membership, rebranding as NACCS to better reflect its mission.

Today, NACCS is a thriving professional society committed to collaboration, education, and innovation. Its vibrant community of professionals is dedicated to improving neuro anesthesia and critical care patient outcomes. The society continues to adapt to the changing landscape of medicine, embracing new technologies, research methodologies, and educational strategies. With its strong commitment to knowledge-sharing and collaboration, NACCS remains at the forefront of medical excellence, celebrating nearly 60 years of impact in 2025.

Objectives

Client-Editable WordPress Website

One of the fundamental objectives of the NACCS website project was to create a fully editable WordPress platform, allowing the client to manage their own content with ease. As a medical society, NACCS regularly updates its website with new research, event announcements, educational materials, and policy changes. A rigid or developer-dependent system would slow down content updates and hinder society’s ability to stay current. By choosing WordPress, we provided NACCS with an intuitive, user-friendly content management system (CMS) that empowers their team to make real-time changes. Custom training on the use of WordPress blocks ensured that administrators could confidently add, edit, and organise content without needing coding knowledge, making the website a sustainable and cost-effective solution for the long term.

Role-Based Permissions

With multiple stakeholders accessing the website, it was essential to implement role-based permissions to maintain security and streamline user management. Different user types—including administrators, content contributors, and general members—needed varying levels of control over content and functionality. We configured the system so administrators could manage all aspects of the site while contributors could update specific sections without disrupting core site settings. General members, on the other hand, had controlled access to premium content such as educational resources and event materials. By implementing granular permission settings, we ensured that the right people had access to the right tools while minimising the risk of accidental content deletion, unauthorised changes, or security breaches.

Performant & Optimised for Speed

A high-performing website is crucial, especially for medical professionals who need quick access to critical information. Slow load times can frustrate users, increase bounce rates, and diminish engagement with key resources. We optimised the NACCS website by implementing caching strategies, efficient coding, optimised images, and lightweight plugins to enhance speed and performance. As a result, the website achieved a 95%+ Google PageSpeed score, ensuring that users could navigate seamlessly across devices. Additionally, we prioritised mobile responsiveness, ensuring that members accessing the website from tablets or smartphones would experience the same level of performance as desktop users. These optimisations enhanced user experience and boosted SEO rankings, making the website more discoverable to potential new members.

Complex Content Clearly Presented to the Medical Profession

Medical content is often dense and highly specialised, making it challenging to present in an accessible and digestible manner. One of the key objectives of the NACCS website was to organise complex neuroanesthesia and critical care information in a way that was intuitive for both trainees and seasoned professionals. We designed a structured, easy-to-navigate interface that ensures users can find the information required without unnecessary clicks. The Learning Zone, in particular, was developed as a well-organised hub where members could access resources mapped to RCoA and FFICM curricula, making it an invaluable tool for those preparing for exams or seeking up-to-date guidelines. By prioritising clarity, logical content categorisation, and modern UI/UX design, we ensured that even the most complex medical data was easy to interpret and utilise.

A Portal for Neuro Anaesthesia to Share Information & Best Practices

Beyond being just a website, NACCS needed a collaborative digital hub where members could exchange knowledge, share best practices, and stay connected with the latest neuroanaesthesia and critical care advancements. We integrated features that facilitate knowledge-sharing, such as discussion forums, document libraries, event calendars, and news updates, to achieve this. This created a dynamic space where members could learn from each other, contribute research, and engage in meaningful discussions. Additionally, we ensured that the platform could scale with NACCS’ future needs, allowing for potential expansion with additional interactive features such as webinars, case study submissions, and peer-reviewed article sharing. By positioning the website as an active resource rather than just a static information hub, NACCS members now have a central place to collaborate, learn, and grow as professionals.

Secured with Member Login Functionality

Security was a top priority for the NACCS website, particularly given the sensitive nature of some of its member-exclusive content and discussions. We implemented a robust, GDPR-compliant member login system, ensuring that only authorised individuals could access restricted areas of the website. This included educational materials, internal discussions, and specialised resources for neuroanesthesia professionals. The authentication system was designed to be secure and user-friendly, incorporating strong password policies, session management, and encrypted data transmission. Additionally, we ensured that NACCS administrators had control over user management, allowing them to approve, suspend, or modify member access as needed. This level of security protects valuable resources and reinforces trust among members, knowing that their information is safeguarded.

Approach

  1. Client-Inclusive Process

A key aspect of our approach was ensuring a client-inclusive development process, with the NACCS committee actively involved in every project stage. From the initial discovery phase to the final launch, we worked closely with their team to align the website’s functionality, design, and content structure with their vision and needs. Regular meetings and collaborative decision-making ensured the final product reflected NACCS’ goals. By maintaining open communication and adapting based on their input, we created a platform that met their immediate requirements and positioned them for long-term digital success.

  2. User Requirements & Research-Driven Development

Understanding the needs of NACCS members was essential to crafting a user-friendly and functional website. We conducted user research, stakeholder interviews, and content audits to understand how members interacted with the previous site and what improvements were necessary. This process helped us identify key priorities, such as improving navigation, making content more accessible, and enhancing the Learning Zone for doctors in training. Taking a research-driven approach ensured that every design and development decision was informed by real user needs, resulting in a website that enhances engagement and usability.

  3. Choosing WordPress for Flexibility & Ease of Use

Given NACCS’ need for an editable, scalable, and easy-to-maintain platform, WordPress was the ideal choice for their new website. WordPress offers flexibility and functionality, allowing the NACCS team to manage content independently without requiring advanced technical skills. Additionally, WordPress supports a wide range of plugins and customisations, enabling us to tailor the site to NACCS’ unique needs while maintaining a smooth, intuitive user experience. The platform’s widespread adoption in the medical and nonprofit sectors further validated our choice, ensuring that NACCS would have a long-term, future-proof solution.

  4. Designing with Figma & Following Medical UI Best Practices

We used Figma for wireframing and prototyping to ensure a seamless design process, allowing for real-time collaboration and interactive mockups. This enabled the NACCS committee to visualise the user experience early on, provide feedback, and suggest refinements before development began. Additionally, we adhered to UK government design style UI guidelines, ensuring that the interface met accessibility standards, clear information hierarchy, and best practices for medical websites. The result was a clean, professional, and intuitive design that made it easier for users to confidently navigate complex medical content.

  5. Custom Form Management with Gravity Forms

To enhance user interaction and administrative efficiency, we integrated Gravity Forms, a powerful tool for custom form creation. This allowed NACCS to manage membership applications, event registrations, contact forms, and feedback submissions effortlessly. The flexibility of Gravity Forms enabled us to implement conditional logic, file uploads, and role-based access, ensuring that the forms catered to the specific needs of members, administrators, and contributors. By streamlining form management, NACCS could efficiently collect, process, and organise critical information, improving user experience and internal workflows.

Challenges

Mobile-First Design & Responsive User Experience

One of the key challenges in developing the NACCS website was ensuring a seamless experience across all devices, particularly for mobile users. Since many medical professionals access information on the go, the site must be fully responsive without compromising functionality or readability. We adopted a mobile-first design approach, meaning layouts, navigation, and interactive elements were optimised for smaller screens before scaling up to desktops. Extensive user testing across multiple devices and browsers helped us fine-tune the responsiveness, ensuring that all users—whether on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop—could easily access critical resources.

Ensuring GDPR Compliance & Data Protection

As a membership-based organisation handling sensitive user data, NACCS needed a website that complied with GDPR regulations to protect personal information and ensure transparency in data handling. This involved implementing precise user consent mechanisms, encrypted data storage, and secure authentication protocols. Additionally, we designed cookie consent tools and privacy policy pages to ensure members understood how their data was used. By prioritising security and compliance from the outset, we built a website that met legal standards and strengthened user trust and confidence in NACCS as a professional organisation.

Content Restructuring for Clarity & Accessibility

With years’ worth of accumulated content, one of the significant challenges was organising and simplifying the website’s structure to enhance usability. The previous site had dense, fragmented information, making it difficult for users to find what they needed. We conducted a full content audit, identifying redundant, outdated, or difficult-to-navigate sections. The solution was a cleaner, more intuitive content hierarchy with clearly defined categories, improved search functionality, and streamlined navigation. By presenting complex medical information in a logical, accessible manner, we improved user engagement and made the website a more effective resource for NACCS members.

Accurate & Secure Data Migration

Moving NACCS’ existing content and membership data to the new website required careful planning and execution to avoid data loss or corruption. We performed a comprehensive data audit, identifying key information that needed to be retained, reformatted, or updated. Using reliable migration tools and automated scripts, we ensured that all content, including membership records, research materials, and historical documents, was transferred accurately. Additionally, backup and verification processes were implemented to prevent errors and maintain data integrity throughout the migration. The result was a smooth transition, ensuring NACCS could continue operations without disruption.

Client Training for CMS Management

To ensure that NACCS could manage their website independently, we provided comprehensive training sessions on the new WordPress CMS. Many administrators had limited technical expertise, so we created step-by-step guides, video tutorials, and hands-on workshops to familiarise them with content updates, user management, and form processing. The training was designed to be accessible and practical, empowering the NACCS team to maintain their site without relying on developers for routine updates. This approach improved efficiency and ensured long-term sustainability for the website.

Minimising Downtime & Seamless Launch

Given that the NACCS website is a critical resource for members, minimising downtime during the transition was essential. Any disruption could impact access to necessary materials, events, or professional discussions. We carefully planned the website deployment strategy, scheduling the migration and launch during low-traffic periods to reduce the risk of inconvenience. A staging environment allowed for thorough testing before going live, ensuring all features worked correctly. By prioritising a seamless transition with minimal downtime, we successfully launched the new site without impacting user experience or accessibility.
