Meshamorphosis: Revolutionising 3D Model Conversion

As creators of web-based applications, we are continually faced with the challenges and advantages of technological advancement. For those in the team working with 3D models, converting .fbx files or .obj files into the faster, more efficient .glb format using traditional tools like Blender has been time-consuming. This has led us to develop Meshamorphosis, a powerful web-based app with no backend designed to simplify and speed up the 3D model conversion process, saving time and optimising performance for developers and creators alike.

The Story Behind Meshamorphosis

Our journey with Meshamorphosis began with a simple yet crucial need: we are building a browser-based game for you all to enjoy at Christmas (more on this very soon!). As we delved deeper into this project, it became clear that working with 3D models was slowing us down. This was particularly noticeable when converting old formats like .fbx into the new .glb standard. In game development and many other industries, the .glb format, which has been an open standard for several years, is now recognised as the future of 3D modeling. It’s faster, more efficient, and better suited for modern browsers and devices. Unfortunately, the conversion process, particularly when using popular tools like Blender, can be time-consuming.

How Meshamorphosis Works

At its core, Meshamorphosis was designed to be simple yet powerful. It’s a web-based application that enables users to convert individual or bulk .fbx files into the .glb format. For those unfamiliar, .fbx was the go-to format for years, but it’s becoming increasingly outdated. The .glb format, on the other hand, is optimised for the web, allowing for faster load times, smaller file sizes, and improved compatibility across platforms like Godot, Roblox, Unreal Engine, and Unity. The system does not upload any files to a backend server but simply into your own computers browser, therefore the files never leave your computer while being converted.

By integrating React Three Fiber and Three Drei, Meshamorphosis provides a seamless experience for users, whether they’re developers, designers, or hobbyists. The startup tutorial shows users exactly how to use the system with ease, with just a few clicks users can convert their 3D models without needing to fire up complex software like Blender which requires time and expertise. This streamlined approach allows creators to focus more on their creative vision and less on the technical hurdles that come with working with different file formats.

For game developers, the benefits are clear. When you’re working on a proof of concept, every minute counts. The time saved using Meshamorphosis can make the difference between completing a project on time or falling behind. It is not just game developers who stand to benefit. Anyone working with 3D models—whether it’s for animation, product design, or virtual reality—can take advantage of this tool to make their workflow faster and more efficient.

Beta Testing with Industry Experts

We’re not the only ones who believe in the potential of Meshamorphosis. As part of our beta testing, we had the privilege of collaborating with some of the biggest names in the 3D and game development communities. Antony Blackett from Synty, a well-known asset creator, tested the application and provided valuable feedback. His input helped us refine the user experience, ensuring that even those dealing with large asset libraries can benefit from Meshamorphosis.

We also worked with Bruno Simon, the author of the popular ‘Three.js Journey’ course, which is the largest learning resource for THREE.js on the internet. His expertise in 3D rendering and web-based applications made him the perfect person to put Meshamorphosis through its paces. Lastly, Wawa Sensei, a YouTube star and the creator of the ’The Ultimate Guide to 3D Web Development’ course, added his insights, ensuring that our tool works seamlessly for the React community, one of the fastest-growing web development ecosystems today.

More Than Just for Gamers

While Meshamorphosis was born out of our need to speed up game development, its applications go far beyond gaming. Any industry that works with 3D models can benefit from the ability to quickly convert older formats into the more efficient .glb standard. This includes industries like architecture, product design, education, and even medical imaging. In fact, anyone who works with 3D content on the web can streamline their workflow with Meshamorphosis, cutting down hours of manual conversion into just minutes.

For designers working on virtual showrooms, architects creating interactive walkthroughs, or product developers showcasing new prototypes, Meshamorphosis is a valuable tool. And because it’s web-based, it doesn’t require any downloads or installation, making it accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Meshamorphosis is completely free, there is no cost given to anyone who wishes to achieve their tasks quicker by using it.

The Future of 3D Model Sharing

As the world increasingly shifts towards virtual and augmented reality experiences, the need for efficient, web-friendly 3D models will only grow. The .glb format is poised to become the industry standard, and tools like Meshamorphosis will play a critical role in making the transition smoother for creators. By simplifying the conversion process, we’re not only saving time but also empowering more people to create, share, and innovate using 3D models.

Whether you’re a game developer, a 3D artist, or simply someone looking to streamline your workflow, Meshamorphosis is here to help you get there faster.
